Prompt for writing:
Several parents have objected to the literature being assigned to children in your school's English classes. They say that the novels, play, and short stories are mostly about death, crime, violence, illness, unhappy love, and other subjects that depict human suffering. Instead, they insist that teachers select inspiring and uplifting works about courage, love, loyalty, family happiness, patriotism -- noble subjects that depict humans at their best.
The English teachers have defended their choices, stating that most worthwhile literature from ancient times until today deals with human conflicts, not with he bright side of life. Furthermore, the books they teach contain provocative ideas that inspire students to think. In your opinion, should the English teachers change the literature they teach to comply with the demands of the parents?
In your essay, take a position on the issue. You may support either one of the points of view, or you may present a different point of view. Whatever your position, support it with specific reasons and examples.
